You want to take the kids on a trip, maybe out of state, maybe abroad, and you're unsure what notice or permission you owe the other parent, or where the passports even are.

What worked

What tends to work: give written notice early with dates, destination, and contact info, and get any required consent in writing before you book. This matters most for international travel, which can require both parents' sign-off and both parents for a minor's passport. Keep copies of consent letters and IDs with you.
