When your teen resists the custody schedule
Shared by Curated by CoreParent
Your teenager doesn't want to switch houses on schedule. Friends, activities, and their own life are all on one side, and the calendar feels like it's fighting their independence.
What I tried
Forcing strict adherence, or letting it slide entirely and blowing up the plan, and reading their resistance as rejection of one parent.
What worked
What tends to work: give a teen real input without handing them full control. Build the schedule around their actual life (activities, friends, license), stay flexible on the edges, and keep the relationship warm even when the nights don't add up 'fairly.' Teens pull toward autonomy, not away from you. The parent who stays steady and non-punitive is the one they keep coming back to.
