Mother's Day and Father's Day Custody
Mother's Day with the mother, Father's Day with the father. Nearly universal across parenting plans. The only real decisions are pickup time and what happens when a parent is traveling.
Typical Arrangements
Full day with the honored parent
Children spend the entire day (or weekend) with the mother on Mother's Day, father on Father's Day, regardless of whose regular custody weekend it is. Most common arrangement.
Afternoon-only
Children spend 10 AM - 6 PM with the honored parent; regular custody schedule resumes that evening. Less disruptive if the regular custody parent had travel plans.
Common Conflict Scenarios
The honored parent is traveling or unavailable on the holiday.
Plans typically offer a make-up window: the honored parent can request the adjacent weekend or a specific alternate day. Some plans say 'if the honored parent waives the day, the regular schedule applies.'
Same-sex or nontraditional families where 'Mother's Day' and 'Father's Day' don't map cleanly.
Plans can define a custom 'Parent Honoring Day' for each parent on the calendar date of their choice, regardless of Hallmark convention. Clarify in writing to avoid annual negotiation.
