Walking into mediation calmer

Shared by Curated by CoreParent

You've got a mediation session coming up and you're anxious, worried it'll turn into a rehash of every grievance or that you'll get steamrolled.

What I tried

Going in to 'win,' rehearsing every wrong the other person did, or arriving with no priorities and getting pulled into their agenda.

What worked

What tends to work: pick your top two or three must-haves before you walk in, and be ready to trade on everything else. Frame each ask around the kids, not the history ('the kids need a consistent school-week routine'), because that's the language mediators and courts respond to. Bring your calm, not your case file of grievances. This is general experience, not legal advice. Your own family-law attorney should prep you for your specific jurisdiction.
