The first handoff that finally went smoothly
Shared by Curated by CoreParent
For months, exchanges were dread: tense, awkward, sometimes ugly. Then one day it just… worked. It's worth knowing what makes that happen so it can happen again.
What I tried
Waiting for the other parent to change, or bringing the week's grievances to the doorstep.
What worked
What tends to work, in hindsight: keep handoffs boring on purpose. Same place, same time, a two-minute warm goodbye to the kids, no side conversations about conflict. Neutral public locations lower the temperature. The smooth ones aren't magic. They're the ones where nobody tries to resolve anything at the door. Protect the handoff as the kids' moment, not yours, and 'smooth' slowly becomes the default.
