Handoffs when your child cries at the door

Shared by Curated by CoreParent

The exchange turns into tears. Your child clings, melts down, or begs not to go. It's gut-wrenching, and it's easy to read it as proof that something is wrong at the other home.

What I tried

Lingering to comfort them (which stretches the goodbye), interrogating them afterward, or letting your own face show how hard it is. All of those tend to make the next handoff worse.

What worked

What tends to work: keep goodbyes short, upbeat, and confident. Kids borrow their sense of safety from your calm. A tiny ritual helps (a special handshake, 'see you in three sleeps'). Most kids settle within minutes of leaving, and the tears at the threshold are usually about the transition, not the destination. If distress is genuinely persistent or escalating, that's worth raising with a professional rather than trying to diagnose it from the doorway.
