Getting through your first holiday apart

Shared by Curated by CoreParent

The first big holiday after separating is often the hardest one. There's the empty half of the day, the traditions that suddenly feel different, and the pressure to make it perfect so the kids don't feel the loss.

What I tried

Parents try to recreate the old holiday exactly, or to out-do the other home. Some over-schedule to avoid the quiet. Others white-knuckle through and end up exhausted and resentful.

What worked

What tends to work: lower the bar and start ONE new small tradition that belongs only to your home (a pajama morning, a specific meal, a movie). Tell the kids the plan in advance so the day feels predictable. Keep the handoff brief and warm. And plan something for yourself for the empty hours instead of leaving them open. The ache is real, and structure helps more than willpower.
